A check of the National Sex Offender website is required for all adults who will work with or regularly attend programs or facilities where youth will be present, and should be completed prior to their attendance. Furthermore, doing this search before the rest of the volunteer leader screening can manage risk with less expenditure of time and money.

In order to conduct this search, staff needs

• Full name (and other names used)

Enter first and last name, enter

If there are any results on the searched name

• Print off all the listings
• Provide to the responsible staff person can see it
• Sometimes the name matches but the remaining data allows us to determine that our volunteer is not the person listed, photos allow us to determine that (date of birth, current address, etc.)
• If the person is an exact match to a listing on the registry
  • Notify the blumanhourst@email.arizona.edu that the volunteer does not qualify, providing
    • Name
    • Full mailing address
    • Date the registry was checked
  • The suspended applicant will receive a letter from the state office notifying them that their application has been suspended and will not be reopened.
  • This person will be added to the list of potential or former volunteers who should not be considered in future.

If there is no match

• Print the No Results page
• Date and initial the page
• File the page
  • Potential volunteer’s personnel file
  • Intermittent volunteer or accompanying adult in a folder for the club

Length of time to complete:         up to 15 minutes per person

Checking the neighborhood watch sex offender website

Additionally, it is possible to search local law enforcement websites to find out if registered sex offenders live in the surrounding area.  These websites open the opportunity to search a specific area, some by town, zip code, etc.
